Any time after March 1 of the year prior to the beginning of your homeschool year, you must complete and send in to your state's commissioner of Education an "Enrollment Notice for Home Study Program" form provided by the state dept. The form asks for the name and ages of the home-schooled children; names, addresses, phone numbers, and signatures of the parents and of persons providing instruction; an assessment of progress for each child enrolled the previous year; "independent professional evidence" on whether a child is handicapped for each child not previously enrolled in school; an outline of each course of study; and identification of your school district.
Plan to include reading\English, science, math and social studies including citizenship, history, US & VT government; plus physical education, health and fine arts.
You may home teach children residing in your home and no more than two other children of one other family.
Within 14 days of your receipt of your Enrollment Notice, the commissioner will reply with an "acknowledgement of compliance," or ask for missing information, due in 14 days,, or order a hearing.
Arrange for yearly assessment of your child's progress in each subject by one or more of the following:
1) a certified teacher,
2) a teacher from an approved VT school,
3) a commercial curriculum publisher's teacher advisory service report along with a portfolio of your child's work,
5) standardized achievement test results (administered by a qualified person or by an approved VT school)
6) "a report prepared by the parents or the student's instructor together with a portfolio of the student's work".
